Natalie Portman in the movie 'Black Swan' |
IMDb : 8.8/10
Darren Aronofsky's latest film 'Black Swan' is nothing less than a masterpiece. His last flick, 'The Wrestler' was flawless but in 'Black Swan' Aronofsky defines perfection. It's a spell binding web of extreme human emotions explored in the most haunting and hysterical way. With 'Black Swan' Natalie Portman strikes us with her best performance till date. No doubt that this seductively wicked film would attain multiple Oscar nominations.
Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman) is dancer in a New York Ballet company who has struggled her way through, to get the role of the lead dancer in the classical ballet 'Swan Lake' . A fragile and a over protected girl by her mother, she starts hallucinating bad things under the peer pressure of the director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel), who wants her to get in character of black swan who is seductive, unrestricted and lustful, a complete opposite of what Nina is. Mila Kunis plays the role of Lily who is a new passionate dancer and actually portrays the dark side of Nina, perfect for the role of black swan. Then starts the journey of Nina through the darkest territory restricted by her own conscience.
The film is about achieving the most elusive dream by losing the hold of reality. The film forces the viewer to pry inside their own heart and search for the answers to the questions which are fading away with the lapse of time. The fear is omnipresent from the first minute of the film and seeps into your every artery after the second half. Portman with her performance almost defines infinity. Her eyes throughout the film expresses a million words, guiding us through the darkest illusions of her journey. Her performance during the climax, where she dances the black swan simply makes you speechless. Portman is supported by a gifted supporting cast, which gives justice to their roles. The cinematography is flawless and visually stunning.
The suspense during the first half is on the simmer but it starts to boil during the second half with a top-notch climax. Aronofsky as a director injects the fear in a totally Hitchcock style buffered with his own definitiveness, which makes the movie absolutely enthralling to watch. The way he makes the character to descent into complete madness, is simply mind blowing. Incredible direction, superb acting and precise cinematography makes it charming, even for a second time watch. This movie is surely one of the best films of the year and Portman's performance is one the best female performances I have seen through the entire decade. There are great chances that this film may become the silent killer during the Oscars and steal the entire show!!!
